top tips for holiday water safety & swimming with kids

Whether you spend your vacations swimming at the swimming pool, beach or lake - being up to date on water safety when you have kids is so important!

If you are planning a staycation here in Grand Cayman or perhaps a trip off island, pool & sea swimming is sure to be on the agenda, but it is really important to prioritise safety! Here at Sun Tot Swim water safety is one of our core foundation essentials, we teach it right from the start in ourparent & baby lessons through to when the kids have out grown their learn to swim journey with us.

 TRAVEL TIPS

  • Before renting a home or condo for a vacation, ask if there are safety features or a gate surrounding the swimming pool area, prior to booking.

  • Discuss the types of water your child will be swimming in, whether it is a lake, river, ocean, pool, etc.

  • When on vacation, remember that your child is swimming in unfamiliar waters that may be colder, deeper, or darker than what they experience in swimming lessons.

  • Always wear a life jacket when rafting or boating, or a floatie vest if you’re playing in the pool with other kids and can’t give 1:1 constant attention.

AT HOME

  • Never leave a child unattended in the bathtub for even a moment.

  • All wading pools and buckets in the yard should be drained immediately after use.

  • Make sure that all pools, hot tubs, and ponds have safety fences, covers, or nets around or on them.

SUN PROTECTION TIPS

  • Be in the shade as often as possible.

  • Use an umbrella or wide brim hat to protect faces, ears, and necks.

  • Minimize direct sunlight between 10 am-4 pm; scheduling outdoor activities around those times.

  • Wear swim attire with UPF 50 or more.

  • Apply a minimum of SPF 30, half an hour before swimming.

  • Reapply sunscreen every 1-2 hours and after swimming.

  • Wear proper UV protectant sunglasses.

TOP TIP:

If you’d like your little one to experience sea swimming and snorkelling, we run a summer snorkel camp every year, where the kids can explore the underwater world, practice using their mask and fins, gain confidence in deep and large areas of the ocean, and make summer memories with us. Camp runs during July and August. Booking starts in May. Get in touch for all the info!
